Of all the shows that took place at Cornerstone 1993, probably the one most talked about for years to come was LSU’s show on Main Stage.
This clip is interspersed with some other random video bits and the audio track sounds like the studio track for the song, but the visual aspects are the important part of this video.
LifeSavers Underground (LSU) was the band project of Michael Knott, who has always embraced the bizarre and pushed the boundaries of art in Christian music. I selected this clip because of the memorable images, such as Knott coming out onto stage with the Cookie Monster head on and the lighted bomb prop bounding around the crowd. At other times he donned a fat clown outfit and near the end of the show covered himself in baked beans. I’m not even going to try and figure out the symbolism of all of this (I’m sure there is some, but I can’t figure it out.) so I’ll just put it out there and leave you, the viewer, to see and interpret. (And how about the stage diving?? This would never be allowed on main stage ever now!)
It’s not really my thing, but if anything, the show had people talking, and the concert went down as one of the most memorable moments of Cornerstone 1993.
That looks more like Gallery than Main Stage, doesn’t it? The spotlight on JJT looked like Main Stage, but the lower stage and backdrop kind of looked more like Gallery.
I never really got into Knott or LSU. Saw them live (briefly) at an Atlanta festival, and was mystified by Knott coming out in a dress and throwing hamburger meat into the crowd, so I wandered off to see something else. I bought a bunch of his stuff last year, though, and although it’s hit and miss and hard to figure, some of it (like “The Bomb”) is pretty freakin’ cool.
