You're right about the 2003 season. I forgot about the BYU game. I'll correct that.

...and you're right about Georgia, too. It's not fair to Gailey that he was playing Georgia at the peak of their winning in the last 20 years, but the same thing happened to Donnan. He happened to be facing Tech at their peak and it was his undoing. Head Coaches take these jobs knowing they are a lightning rod and when it's not working, they are the first thing to go. That's what makes all the millions of dollars worth it, I guess.

I'm not optimistic about our fanbase. We've been spoiled by the "success" of seven win seasons. What happens when the new coach arrives next year and we endure a four or five-win year before he gets things turned around?

A few thoughts as I read through this post:

U[sic]GA is currently on about the best run they've been on in history. Yeah, there are a couple of games (2006, in particular) that we should have won, but it's a little simplistic to simply compare wins and losses against U[sic]GA without looking at the quality of the competition.

The 2003 Auburn game was the first home game, but the second of Reggie's career. The first was a loss at BYU.

2007 was not a rebuilding year. We had 18 seniors on this team, and placed 8 on the first and second All ACC teams. Yeah, we were starting a new QB and lost Calvin Johnson, but we still had enough talent to have an above average year. I don't love "woulda couldas," but with just a little luck or better execution on a couple of plays (especially at UVA and UMD, and on those three touchbacks against U[sic]GA) we'd have ended up with 9 or 10 wins.

I have my fair share of frustrations with Gailey - I've driven and flown thousands of miles to watch this team lose bad at UVA, UMD, Duke, BYU, in San Francisco, etc. But I think it's a sad state when the idiots take over the asylum, as is the case with our fanbase. You posted a while back about how bad our fans are, and it's true. We've got the whiniest, most spineless, most clueless fans of any team I've ever seen, and letting them decide when it's time to fire a coach sets a bad precedent. I really hope we find a guy that can unite the fanbase and keep the team at least as good as Gailey left it, but I have my doubts. The same people that booed Ball last year are booing Bennett this year, and the same people that booed Gailey this year will boo the new guy next year.
