I'm in agreement with you on "If A Song Could Be President", but I think we part ways in the jazz and percussion of the album. Hearing song after song of piano and acoustic guitar was beginning to wear on me, so I'm delighted to hear OTR try a different audio approach to their music.

Nice review, but after listening to the album a couple of times (online and the actual CD), I'm not sure I like it all that much. "Let's Spend the Day in Bed" has some lyrics that are, well, dumb. Karin's slurred, oddly-pronounced vocals are a little too far out there throughout the album. The jingly-jangly random noise percussion is cute once or twice, but wears on you after a while. The "go for an easy cheer" lyrics (pandering to a segment of Over the Rhine's audience that I find insufferable) in "If A Song..." bring down an otherwise nicely melodic song. "Bling bling" in an OtR lyric? Seriously?

"Entertaining Thoughts" is a nice, non-annoying song - I wish more of the album sounded like that, and less like ragtime and jazz. Some of the stuff is fun live ("Trouble" in particular), but I'm afraid some of it's going to turn into "suffer through it" live songs like "Ohio" did. (Thinking of the opening track, in particular.)

So I guess I applaud the ambition and the attempt to do something different, but early on in listening to the end result, I'm not really all that enthused.
