Less Than Love

LESS THAN LOVE
We were fourteen
and sitting in a movie
and were almost holding hands
and my thumb would venture over for a second or two
enough for her to understand
and I finally got up the nerve
figured what did I have to lose?
it felt good being together
and after the show
I was walking her home
realized I didn’t even like her

it’s a lonely world
everybody’s grabbing what they can get
and love is wonderful you’ve heard
don’t know if you’ve seen it yet
but you can’t miss it when it comes
don’t settle for less than love

I was nineteen
and hanging out at Denny’s
that’s where we always went
and this girl I’d seen a couple a times before
it was no accident, our eyes met
I went over and said hello
asked her name and then we talked about our hometowns
she said she’d met her boyfriend there
my buddy asked if I got her number as I sat back down

it’s a lonely world
everybody’s grabbing what they can get
and love is wonderful you’ve heard
don’t know if you’ve seen it yet
but you can’t miss it when it comes
don’t settle for less than love

almost every girl I’ve ever kissed is married
and that’s not a lot of weddings
but it’s sure a crazy thought
and though they all seem like someone else’s story
I wonder what we paid for what we got

it’s a lonely world
everybody’s grabbing what they can get
and love is wonderful you’ve heard
don’t know if you’ve seen it yet
but you can’t miss it when it comes
don’t settle for less than love
- “Less Than Love” by The Normals

I suppose that some of the visitors to my site are under the assumption that I’ve always been married and that I know everything about relationships and that I’ve never had a problem with the ladies. (okay, you can stop laughing now) Not so, by a long shot, dear reader! Anyone who’s known me for longer than four or so years would vigorously agree. The road that lead me to Adriene and to our happy adventure was a long, arduous and winding one, and along the way I was taught a thousand lessons. I’m kinda burned out on theological topics, and since it’s spring and love is in the air, I thought I would share some old stories about my bumbling, fumbling attempts at romance before the right person came along. I’ll write a couple of stories out and we’ll see how far it goes. Maybe it will encourage you if you’re single and feel like things are hopeless. If you’re married, maybe it will cause you to look back on your failed attempts before finding the right one and laugh a little bit. Enjoy.

[...] When I started writing posts about my past dating life, I knew it would be a challenge and a challenge is what I wanted, so I took it head on. It’s easy to write about the ups, but the downs are far more challenging. Reviewing my original post, my original goal was to a.) let people who have only met me recently learn a little about me and b.) encourage those discouraged about dating by telling a story that eventually led to my happy marriage. The tricky part is that many of the posts, by neccessity, involve discussing other people. It’s far too easy to air dirty laundry and take petty swipes at someone when you’re in control of a website, but real character happens when you can examine a stormy conflict and find the lessons you learned and the parts of your life you can improve instead of doling out blame to other people. I’ve got nothing to say bad about the people in my past, regardless of whatever disputes we might have had. I’d like to think that I only chose girls of high quality and character, otherwise I would’ve never dated them in the first place! [...]
