Changes Coming.

Well, I think most everyone knows this by now, but just in case you don’t, Jeff and I have some new arrivals coming in September. :)

What is it about this time of year…

Posted in General at 10:22 am by Adriene

…that makes me watch hours upon hours of the Food Network?

Seriously - in the past four days, I’ve seen Rachael Ray’s Thanksgiving in 60 four times and Unwrapped’s Thanksgiving special twice. And I’ll probably do it again!

What is wrong with me?

Even 8-year-olds make fun of me.

Yesterday was NOT GOOD. For the uninitiated, let me tell you: Atlanta traffic SUCKS on Halloween. It’s bad any other day, but something about October 31st makes the level of suckitude skyrocket to astronomical levels. My usual hour to hour and 15 minute commute turned to two hours and 15 minutes yesterday. I was less-than-pleased.

However, Jeff was already at home passing out candy to youngsters, so I didn’t need to worry about flooring it home so I could beat the kids there. Oddly, we didn’t have that many trick-or-treaters this year. I blame it on the fact that we have about 10 new neighborhoods full of McMansions around us, which means all the kids in our neighborhood pretty much drive to the “rich” neighborhoods so they can get better candy. But that’s okay. More leftovers for me!

The apex of the evening, however, had to be around 7:15pm. Jeff decided it was my turn to answer the door, so I grabbed the bowl of candy and marched down the half-flight of stairs to the front door. I opened it to reveal a princess, a football player, Spiderman, and an eight-year-old in glasses wearing a black robe with a Gryffindor patch on it, and a maroon and gold tie.

“Oh!” I exclaimed. “You must be Harry Potter.”

The kid kinda stared at me for a minute, then gave me a look as if I had just sprouted an arm out of my forehead.

“NO,” he informed me. “I am NOT Harry. I’m RON. I HAVE RED HAIR. SEE?”

“Oh, sorry, the glasses threw me.”

I closed the door and walked upstairs to find my husband doubled over in laughter. I guess he finds it funny that a kid in elementary school corrected me on something Harry Potter-related.

Now I need to find out where that kid lives so I can TP his house.

A weekend in which I got injured. Twice.

And I enjoyed every minute of it!

Several months back, Jeff and I made the decision to have a sort of “mini-vacation” in downtown Atlanta this weekend (a whopping 25 miles from home!) Why? Tech’s Homecoming game was this weekend, as well as all of the activities surrounding it. So, instead of driving back to our house after Mini 500 on Friday and then back down to Tech at 8am on Saturday so we could see the Wreck Parade, we got a room at the Renaissance right across the interstate from Tech, well within walking distance.

A couple of weeks after we booked the hotel, we found out that Mute Math was playing the Roxy on Friday night. EXCELLENT! Jeff saw them at Cornerstone a few months ago, and I’ve wanted to see them ever since I first listened to the CD Jeff picked up, so we were all over that.

The concert was AWESOME. Seriously. Best show I’ve seen all year, I think. They had three opening acts - the Bowie-esque Club of the Sons (very entertaining, even though their music isn’t quite my cup of tea), Jonezetta (somewhat reminiscent of Franz Ferdinand), and the Whigs (a band out of Athens, so they had a fairly large group of fans there, too - I was not terribly impressed. All of their songs sounded the same to me). But when Mute Math came on, it put all the others to shame. I won’t write a review here, mostly because I don’t think I’d be able to without gushing. Jeff and I managed to get there early enough to secure a spot up front and center on the floor, so when they played “Reset” for their encore, and Paul started passing around the Atari to the crowd, we were able to get our hands on it - very cool! Jeff shot some video of that part - and if you look closely you can see a moment where the Atari drops suddenly (at approximately 5:02 in the video), which is how I secured injury #1 of the weekend. I was passing it forward to the stage, since the song was just about over, and I thought the guy next to me had a good grasp on it, but he apparently didn’t, and I wound up dropping it on my head. I had a good red mark on my forehead the rest of the night, but as far as I can tell, I didn’t bruise!

Saturday morning, we slept in a little bit, since we were out late at the concert the night before. However, we slept a little TOO late and missed the Wreck Parade completely, including the ever-entertaining Contraption category. We spent most of the morning wandering around campus looking at the various Homecoming displays in front of the fraternities and sororities (including a very humorous display in front of one of the fraternities which consisted of a large Buzz swinging a helmet at the head of a Sebastian the Ibis.). We swung by Jeff’s fraternity house for lunch and then headed on to the game.

Let me tell you. Georgia Tech football is going to drive me to an early grave. I was a nervous wreck the entire game, from the moment that Reggie Ball fumbled on the first play of the game and a Miami guy ran it back for a touchdown. We trailed most of the first half, and I wasn’t feeling so well anyway, so I was sitting down a good portion of the time. After halftime, Tech seemed to get its act together again and pulled out to a two-touchdown lead with about 3 minutes left to go. My mood had improved significantly at that point, so I got caught up in the moment and started jumping up and down with the rest of the crowd. Which brings me to injury #2. You should really look where you are jumping when you are celebrating. I wound up jumping a little too close to the bleacher seat in front of me and banged my shin up against it, removing a little skin at the same time. IT HURT. BAD. I said a bad word or two. And it kind of ruined my mood. It’s pretty sore today, but I’m hoping it feels better soon.

After the game, we went back to Theta Xi to watch the end of the UF-UGA game. Georgia lost. :) :) :) :)

And UNC lost, too. :) :) :) :)

Now, if NC State had been able to pull out a win, it would have been a perfect weekend. But it was a pretty darn good one otherwise!

I cannot forget where it is that I come from.

Posted in General at 12:30 pm by Adriene

I was just perusing some of Jeff’s photos from his Flickr site, and found some that he took last Christmas when we were in Savannah. Seriously, I often forget how beautiful the town I grew up in is:

Doors to the Lutheran Church of the Ascension:

Trinity United Methodist Church, the oldest Methodist congregation (and also where Jeff and I were married):

Spanish Moss (I love how all the trees down there look like this):

Factor’s Walk:

The spires of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist:

Sometimes I get homesick when I see pictures like this - but I know it’s only three hours away and I can visit whenever I want.

Now, I’ve just got to get Jeff to take some pictures of the rivers and the marshes around there, and I’ll be set. :)
