Song of the Week - 10/25/04

Posted in Song of the Week at 9:57 am by Adriene

This week’s song of the week is:

“Trouble” - Coldplay

I’ll have to admit, my first exposure to Coldplay (the much-overplayed “Yellow”) left me underwhelmed. It was alright, but it didn’t really do anything for me. Then I heard “Trouble” a couple of months later and my ears perked up.

So, yeah, this is the song that turned me on to Coldplay. It’s a great tune about a guy who knows he’s screwed up and his attempt to apologize to the one he’s hurt.

“I never meant to cause you trouble
And I never meant to do you wrong
And I, well if I ever caused you trouble
Oh, no, I never meant to do you harm.”

I think this is a good one to listen to if you’re trying to get the “feel” of what Coldplay sounds like - it showcases Chris Martin’s vocals and Coldplay’s ethereal guitars, as well as the emotion this band is excellent at evoking through their songwriting.

“Clocks” is what convinced me to give them a chance (I love the piano), but “Shiver” is my favorite.

Why are they cold? Can’t they afford to buy sweaters?

    (I have nothing)

Man I love this band. Yeah, they’re Pop, but they’re so darn arty about it! I don’t listen to regular radio much, so “Yellow” never got ruined for me. It’s one of my favorite “celebration” songs. One night after it went public that we were leaving Charlottesvlle, I attended an event where a lot of the students I’d taught over the years were present. One after another came up to me and told me how God had used me in their lives. As I drove away on that clear spring evening, “Yellow” came up on my CD player.

    Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you

I had to stop the car because I was crying so hard. Out loud I said, “Lord Jesus, whatever stars I’ve been given, I give them back to you.”

Powerful moment of praise, with a Brit-Pop band as the catalyst.

you know, ‘yellow’ turned me on to coldplay. i bought ‘parachutes’, but never really listen to it. ‘a rush of blood to the head’ turned me upside down though. i LOVE that album. ‘warning sign’ is the BEST!

“A Rush of Blood to the Head” is my favorite - though I think “In My Place” is probably my favorite Coldplay song. I think I just had been listening to “Trouble” for a while. :)
